Exxon Mobil Under Investigation over Potential Lies in Statements on Climate Change

Last month, the New York attorney general began an investigation of Exxon Mobil to determine if the company lied about the risks of climate change to its investors, or hid information about how climate change might impact the business. This inquiry will review statements made over the past decade to see if they are consistent with the company’s own scientific research. At the heart of the investigation is the question of whether Exxon Mobil disclosed business risks related to climate change as soon as it knew that those risks were likely to be material.

It is also possible that Exxon Mobil will not be the only company to face this level of scrutiny in the future.  According to a New York Times article:

“The Exxon inquiry might expand further to encompass other oil companies, according to the people with knowledge of the case, though no additional subpoenas have been issued to date.”
